David Hockney b.1937 One Night 1966 Etching and aquatint 34.9 × 22.6 cm plate Signed and dated in pencil Edition of 75 In 1966 Hockney decided to produce a series of etchings that were responses to the poems by the Greek-Egyptian writer C. P. Cavafy. Hockney greatly admired Cavafy’s ability to write openly about gay relationships and in his etchings Hockney created scenes of touching intimacy. Many of Hockney’s subjects were based on intimate sketches or photographs of his friends, and in part they were based on his experiences on a trip he made to Beirut in 1966. Here Hockney felt the cosmopolitan atmosphere echoed that of Cavafy’s native Alexandria. |
