Robert Upstone Gallery, Soho

Robert Upstone advises collectors, estates, executors, museums and institutions on British art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with particular expertise in valuation, collection management, private sales and museum acquisition strategy.

Expertise

Robert Upstone was formerly Senior Curator at Tate Britain and later Director of the Modern British Programme at The Fine Art Society. He served for nine years as a member of the Acceptance in Lieu Panel and has advised collectors, estates and museums on British art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Valuations

Professional valuations are undertaken for probate, insurance, family division, collection management and sale planning. Advice is available on individual works of art as well as complete collections, with reports tailored to the requirements of owners, executors and professional advisers.

Valuation and advisory work has been undertaken for a range of private collectors, estates, museums and institutions, including the Middle Temple, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, Girton College Cambridge and Nottingham Castle Museum.

Collection Advice

Advice is offered to private collectors on acquisitions, collection development, condition, provenance, attribution and long-term strategy. Guidance can be provided for both established collections and those in the early stages of formation.

Acceptance in Lieu & Cultural Gifts Scheme

Robert Upstone has extensive experience of the Acceptance in Lieu Scheme and the Cultural Gifts Scheme, advising owners, estates and professional advisers on suitable works, museum placement and application strategy.

Private Sales & Collection Dispersals

The gallery advises on the private sale of individual works and larger groups, with a particular focus on discreet transactions and placing works with suitable collectors, museums and institutions.

Museum & Curatorial Consultancy

Curatorial advice is available for museums and institutions, including collection development, acquisitions, exhibitions, research and interpretation.

Advisory Fees

Advisory work is undertaken on either a project or day-rate basis, depending on the nature of the assignment. Initial discussions are welcomed, and fee proposals tailored to individual requirements.
